The City of Atalon

The City of Atalon and Environs The centerpiece and jewel of the Confederation of the Seven Cities is the gigantic city of Atalon. This ancient city, having several thousand years of recorded history, is layered with the debris of the ages, and yet is as fresh and vibrant as each new ship that berths at her busy port. Over the centuries rulers have come and gone. Long periods of peace have been few, and long periods of war have been numerous, but the city has persisted. Atalon is the hub of many guilds and many religious organizations. The central temple of the priests of Aleadrea lies in the Temple District, right across from a large temple to Talon and a temple to Shandar. The Temple of Seliun lies just around the corner. The Merchants and Hostlers' Guild and the Silver Brotherhood are both within a short walk.

The pride of Atalon is the "Great Bridge of Kings", a monstrous construction that crosses the Straits of Mourning. This huge bridge connects the northern and southern lands, making it a vital strategic point, and thus the object of numerous wars through the centuries. This bridge has also made Atalon the largest, richest and most vibrant trading city in the known world. Emerald Arm Symbol

The central temple district has also, usually, been the seat of the local government. The large keeps, halls and temples throughout this district have housed numerous rulers, as well as priests.Knights of the Emerald Rose At various times there have been kings, dukes and knight mayors ruling Atalon. At this time, however, there is a council of merchants, representing the largest and most powerful guilds. The council meets in the Hall of High Council, which lies between the Temple of Shandar and the Guild Hall of the Silver Brotherhood. The paladins of the Order of the Emerald Fist have a hall nearby, and the Knights of the Emerald Rose also maintain a Guild Hall in this district.

The Wharf Districts are home to many loud and boisterous taverns and inns. There are also markets of all sorts lining the piers. This is an area where goods and peoples of many nations cross paths. The city patrol makes it their business to frequent this area to lend a moderating influence to the atmosphere of open consumerism (i.e. thieving) that tends to run rampant in this area.

The upper Merchant District of Atalon is a place of shops and inns where those who find the wharves a little too rough can go to find goods and services from around the world. There are streets full of jewelers and smiths, as well as more industrial zones where tanners and clothiers abound. Fine inns and restaurants are found on many street corners and the boulevards often are lined with parks and fine homes.

The Thieves Quarter is a warren of low rent apartments, low priced shops, cheap taverns and farmers markets. This area is home to the multitude of menial workers who must support a city of this size. The thousands of huddled poor who live here can be hired for little more than the price of a good meal. This area is also the home to the less reputable guilds and brotherhoods. Those of mixed blood who otherwise might be found in an Ogre Village or Orc town can be seen wandering here. The city patrol rarely enters here unless they are in large groups.

The three inland gates of Atalon each have their own neighborhoods and unique mixes of inns for the weary traveler and barracks for troops and guards. Many general stores can be found in these areas providing supplies for adventurers and caravan guards alike.
